Teens complete the DPS permit test as part of their Texas Teen Drivers Ed Course. The test is included inside the first 6 hours of the program.

After You Pass the Online DPS Test

Once you pass the DPS Written Test inside your online course, you’ll receive your official ADE certificate instantly showing that you completed both the 6-hour Adult Drivers Ed course and the DPS Knowledge Exam. This certificate is fully accepted at all Texas DPS offices. Just download and print!

What You’ll Do Next:

1. Schedule your DPS appointment

Bring your ADE certificate and the required identification, residency, and SSN documents listed on the DPS checklist.

2. Complete your vision screening at DPS

This is required for all new driver license applicants and will be done at the DPS office.

3. Take the DPS Road Test

Because you already passed the DPS written exam online, your only remaining test at DPS is the driving test. You can also look for third party providers of this test in your local area if you prefer not to take it at the DPS.

4. Receive your Texas driver license

After passing the road test and submitting your documents, DPS will issue your license.

Is the online DPS test accepted at all DPS offices?

Yes! When taken through a TDLR-approved course provider, the online test is fully accepted statewide.

Is the online DPS test the same as the one at the DPS office?

Yes, it covers the exact same Road Rules and Road Signs content.

Can adults 25+ take the online test?

Yes! Even though the course isn’t required for ages 25+, completing it allows you to take the written test online.

Do teens take their permit test online too?

Yes. The permit test is included inside the first 6 hours of Teen Drivers Ed.

Do I need an appointment at DPS after passing the test online?

Yes, but only for paperwork, vision test, and the driving test because the written test is already complete.

Do I have to take the full adult course, or can I just take the DPS test online?

For adults 25 and older, Texas does not require a driver education course — you only need to pass the DPS written and road tests.
However, if you want to take the DPS written (knowledge) test online instead of at a DPS office, state-approved providers currently require that you first complete a 6-hour Adult Driver Education (ADE) course.
If you skip the course, you must take the written test in person at DPS.
