Adult 25+ taking Texas DPS written test online – state-approved course

DPS Written Test Online

Texas State-Approved Knowledge Exam

Skip the stress at the DPS! Take the official Texas DPS Written Test online through our state-approved Adult Driver Education course. It’s fast, convenient, and fully accepted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Important Note for Adults 25+

Adults 25 and older are not required to take a driver education course to apply for a Texas license. However, completing the 6-hour Adult Drivers Ed course is highly recommended for several reasons:

  • Only course-takers may take the DPS Written Test online
The Texas DPS Knowledge Exam can only be taken online when it is included inside a TDLR-approved 6-hour adult course.
If you skip the course, you must take the written exam in person at a DPS office.
  • Full DPS Test Preparation
Our course provides in-depth study material, road rules, road signs, and comprehensive lessons, ensuring you are fully prepared for the DPS Knowledge Exam—while still maintaining the shortest course time allowed by law.
  • Trusted, State-Approved Provider
Our Adult Driver Education program is powered by Virtual Drive of Texas—the first and one of the most trusted online driving schools in the state, operating since 2004.

Yes! Even though the course isn’t required for ages 25+, completing it allows you to take the written test online.

Yes. The permit test is included inside the first 6 hours of Teen Drivers Ed.

Yes, but only for paperwork, vision test, and the driving test because the written test is already complete.

For adults 25 and older, Texas does not require a driver education course — you only need to pass the DPS written and road tests.
However, if you want to take the DPS written (knowledge) test online instead of at a DPS office, state-approved providers currently require that you first complete a 6-hour Adult Driver Education (ADE) course.
If you skip the course, you must take the written test in person at DPS.

Because of that requirement, our online course is the easiest and most convenient way for adults 25+ to take the knowledge test from home, skip the DPS lines and test on your schedule.

Yes! Virtual Drive also offers this course and test completely in Spanish. Click here for more information
