Texas Licensing Requirements

A Simple Guide to Getting Licensed in Texas

Texas has different licensing requirements depending on your age and the type of license you are applying for. This page breaks down the essential steps for teens, adults, commercial drivers, and drivers completing defensive driving.

Whether you're earning your first license, preparing for a CDL, or completing court-required training, this guide will help you understand what the state requires before you visit the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Teen Drivers Ed Requirements (Ages 14–17)

Texas requires all teens to complete an approved driver education program and hold a learner license before taking the driving test. The steps below outline the state requirements:

1. Complete 24 Hours of Classroom Instruction

  • Teens must complete 24 hours of online or in-person classroom education.
  • The first 6 hours prepare the student for the DPS Written Exam.

2. Pass the DPS Written Test

  • The knowledge exam may be taken online inside an approved course or at DPS.

3. Apply for a Learner License (Permit)

Teens must visit DPS with:

  • Their certificate of completion for the first 6 hours
  • Required identification documents
  • Parent/guardian signature

4. Complete 44 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Training

Texas requires:

  • 7 hours of driving instruction
  • 7 hours of in-car observation
  • 30 hours of additional practice (10 hours at night)

Training may be completed through:

  • The Parent-Taught program, or
  • A licensed driving school (Self-Paced option)

5. Hold a Learner License for at Least 6 Months

  • This rule applies to all Texas teens, regardless of course type.

6. Pass the Driving (Road) Test

  • Teens may take the test at DPS or with a third-party testing provider once all requirements are met.

Understanding the steps to licensing for adults over 25 who want to take the DPS test online

A driver education course is not required for adults 25 and older, but many choose to take the 6-hour online course because:

  • It includes the DPS Written Test
  • It helps prepare for the DPS road test
  • It simplifies the licensing process

Adults 25+ must still pass:

  • The DPS Written Exam
  • The Road Test
  • A vision screening
  • All identity and residency documentation requirements

Commercial Driver License (CDL) Requirements

Texas CDL licensing requirements and commercial driver training

Texas CDL requirements depend on the type of vehicle you plan to operate. All CDL applicants must:

1. Pass the CDL Knowledge Exams at DPS

  • This includes the General Knowledge Test and any endorsements required.

2. Obtain a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP)

  • A CLP allows you to practice driving a commercial vehicle under supervision.

3. Complete Behind-the-Wheel CDL Training

  • Training must be completed with a CDL school or employer program that meets FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements.

4. Pass the CDL Skills Test

The test includes:

  • Pre-trip inspection
  • Basic vehicle control
  • Road test

5. Choose the Correct CDL Type

  • Class A: Tractor-trailers and large combination vehicle
  • Class B: Straight trucks, buses, dump trucks
  • Endorsements: HazMat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples, Passenger, School Bus

Defensive Driving Requirements

For Ticket Dismissal

Most Texas courts allow drivers to dismiss an eligible ticket by completing a state-approved defensive driving course.

Drivers must:

  • Request permission from the court
  • Complete a 6-hour course
  • Submit the certificate of completion
  • Meet all court deadlines

For Insurance Discounts

Many insurance providers offer a discount for completing defensive driving. Requirements vary by insurer.

Documents Required at DPS for Licensing

Most applicants must bring:

  • Proof of identity
  • Social Security Number
  • Texas residency documents
  • Certificates from state-approved courses
  • Texas Vehicle Registration and Proof of Insurance
  • Payment for DPS fees
  • Proof of lawful presence (if required)

Requirements differ slightly for teens, adults, and CDL applicants. Always verify with your course provider & DPS before your appointment.
