License Texas makes it easy to choose the right online driving course, understand Texas requirements, and complete your training at your own pace. Whether you're a teen, parent, adult, or future commercial driver, we guide you through each step with simple instructions and trusted course options.
Below is an overview of how each type of course works.

1. Choose Parent-Taught or Self-Paced
Parent-Taught (PTDE): A parent or guardian handles all behind-the-wheel training.
Self-Paced: Behind-the-wheel training is completed with a licensed Texas driving school.
2. Complete the First 6 Hours to Earn Your Permit
The first 6 hours prepare the student for the Texas DPS Written Exam. Teens take the exam online inside the course and receive the certificate needed to apply for a learner permit.
3. Continue the Remaining 18 Hours of Online Classroom
Students complete the rest of the online lessons at their own pace using any device.
4. Complete 44 Hours of Driving Instruction
Parent-Taught: Parent uses the provided in-car guides.
Self-Paced: A certified driving school instructor completes all hours.
5. Schedule the DPS Road Test
Once all training is complete and the teen meets state requirements, they take the road test at DPS or a third-party testing provider.
1. Enroll in the 6-Hour State-Approved Course
Adults 18–24 are required to take the course. Adults 25+ may choose to take it to complete the DPS Written Test online.

3. Receive Your Certificate
The certificate you earn after passing the exam is used at DPS when applying for your learner license or driver license.

Adults may schedule their driving test at DPS once they meet all requirements.
